Tory Jones is an IFBB Pro Wheelchair Bodybuilder from Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. Born on April 5, 1989, in Kamloops, Tory developed a passion for training long before becoming a wheelchair athlete. He began training in 2012 and eventually took his dedication to the competitive stage, competing in Classic Physique.
On July 23, 2019, Tory’s life changed dramatically following a serious motor vehicle accident. Tory was a passenger riding home from work when the driver fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle left the road and struck a power pole on Tory’s side before launching approximately 93 feet through the air and eventually landing back on its wheels. The violent impact and whipping motion caused Tory to break his back and sustain a T12 incomplete spinal cord injury, resulting in paraplegia.
Within only a couple of weeks of his injury, Tory was already looking toward his future in bodybuilding. After discovering the Wheelchair Bodybuilding division, he reached out to several competitors, including Nick Scott, and boldly declared that he would become an IFBB Pro within one year. Rather than walking away from the sport he loved, Tory embraced the opportunity to continue competing as a wheelchair athlete and began pursuing an entirely new chapter in his bodybuilding career.
Standing 6’4″ (193 cm), Tory competes at approximately 190 lbs (86.2 kg) and reaches approximately 220 lbs (99.8 kg) in the off-season. His favorite body part to train is his back, with the single-arm lat pulldown being his favorite exercise.
Today, Tory’s motivation extends beyond improving his own physique. He is driven to challenge misconceptions surrounding disabilities and show others what remains possible after a life-changing injury. Hearing from people who have been inspired by his journey to begin training themselves reinforces his purpose and reminds him that his impact reaches far beyond the bodybuilding stage.
Tory continues to approach bodybuilding with the same philosophy that has guided him throughout his journey: continually challenge yourself, train with purpose, and never allow adversity to determine the limits of what you can achieve.
On July 23, 2019, I was a passenger riding home from work when the driver fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle went off the road and struck a power pole on my side before launching approximately 93 feet through the air and eventually landing back on its wheels.
The violent impact and whipping motion caused me to break my back and damage my spinal cord. I sustained a T12 incomplete spinal cord injury, leaving me a paraplegic and using a wheelchair.
From the beginning, I've had a profound love for training, which has remained unwavering over the years.
The drive to continuously challenge and better myself led me to the world of competitive bodybuilding. It's a sport that demands both physical and mental fortitude, offering a perpetual pursuit of self-improvement.
Following my injury, I reached out to several fellow competitors, including Nick Scott, within a couple of weeks. I confidently told them that I'd be turning pro within a year—quite a bold statement!
My motivation is twofold: the unyielding desire to constantly improve and the aspiration to debunk misconceptions surrounding disabilities. The fact that people I've never met personally reach out to share how I've inspired them to begin training is a powerful reminder that the journey is worthwhile.
I wholeheartedly believe that no matter the challenge, pursuing your goals is always possible. This principle extends beyond bodybuilding to every facet of life. Train purposefully and fuel your ambitions with ample nutrition to achieve substantial growth.
